Plasma Technology – Innovative Methods for Coating, Structuring and Modifying Surfaces in Many Fields of Industry |
| |
Compared with other coating methods, the thin film technology and the plasma technology are relatively young technologies. However, these technologies have very quickly conquered their fields of application. Products such as computers, sensors, mobile radio devices, modern automobiles or solar systems could not be manufactured without innovative surface processing methods. Roth & Rau develops and manufactures plants for these modern methods of surface engineering. In 1990, the physicians Dr. Dietmar Roth, Dr. Bernd Rau und Dr. Silvia Roth, former scientists of the Technische Universität Chemnitz, founded the enterprise. Today, the Roth & Rau Group to which, in the meanwhile, an automation enterprise, a software enterprise and a thermal processing equipment manufacturer belong engages about 550 employees worldwide with a turnover of 250 Mio. EUR in 2008.
The core competence of Roth & Rau consists in the area of creation and utilization of plasmas for the coating, structuring or modification of surfaces where the systems engineering and the process know-how are continuously further developed in the own technology center as well as in close cooperation with national and international research institutions. The performance extent of Roth & Rau spans from the development of process and systems engineering via design, assembly, method-related software development up to the commissioning of the plants and the comprehensive customer care. The delivery program comprises components and process plants for the plasma technology that are used in various industrial sectors such as photovoltaics, semiconductor industry, optics, medical engineering or automobile supply industry.

Roth & Rau Achieves More Than 90% of its Turnover in the Photovoltaics Industry

The most important product in the business area "photovoltaics" of the Roth & Rau AG are anti-reflection coating plants for solar cells. At that, a plasma-chemical method – a PECVD process – is used for the deposition of a thin silicon nitride (SiN) layer. The properties of these layers have a significant influence on the efficiency of solar cells and, therefore, represent an important step in the solar-cell manufacturing process. In the last 5 years, the SiN coating was introduced in the production at nearly all solar cell manufacturers. Today, the SiN coating is state-of-the-art. With more than 250 sold plants and more than 6 years of production experience at well-known solar cell manufacturers, Roth & Rau is a leading offerer worldwide. Moreover, Roth & Rau manufactures plants for the production of thin-film solar modules and, since 2006, also offers turnkey solutions for crystalline silicon solar-cell production lines.

Tailored System Solutions for Plasma and Ion Beam Technologies |
In the business area "plasma and ion beam technology", Roth & Rau develops and manufactures key components such as plasma and ion beam sources and process systems for plasma- and ion beam assisted thin-film and surface processing methods that are tailored to specific customer requirements. These components are used in research & development as well as in the production. Customers are, in particular, enterprises of the semiconductor and automobile industry and research and development departments of various different industrial sectors including photovoltaics and research institutes and universities.
